Retrospective introduction This chapter reproduces an article originally published in Changes, an international journal of psychology and psychotherapy that was founded in 1983 and ran until 2001 when it was renamed more explicitly as The Journal of Critical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy, with which I have been associated since its inception as a member of its editorial board.
