ABSTRACT

The SEL Story is an instrumental element of each teacher's approach to SEL. It is not the reading of the story or the theme of the story itself, it is the peer-to-peer communication tools employed during the activity that are the richest and most impactful aspect. There are two options for how you may implement SEL Stories in the classroom:: Be the Solution Teams, and Class Dialogue. Before choosing which option will work best, reflect on happenings in the school community that may or may not need to be addressed. Interpersonal needs of the students and what would best serve them at present should be considered. This chapter also outlines the implementation steps for both SEL options. Transparency is key for SEL to take root in students' lives. Practicing a quick centering activity is a great way to help the class release excess energy that can often make working in a group challenging for your more frenetic students.
