TheindustrialstaplesofthethreeMidlandCountiesofEngland,Nottinghamshire,Derbyshire,andLeicestershire,consistinageneralway,ofthe manufactureoflace,ofsilk,andofhosiery,inallitsverynumerous branches.Ofthese,thehosieryorframeworkknittingtradeistheoldest, andthemostimpartiallyscatteredoverthethreecounties.Thetownof Nottinghamis,however,beyonddoubt,themetropolisoftheMidland lacetrade,andassuchIgiveitthefirstplaceindescribingthedistrict.
