ABSTRACT

The Learning Channel (TLC) aired a new program, Sister Wives, on 26 September 2010. The show provides an insider's look into the lives of a polygamous family in Utah. This particular program was also met with much controversy, as polygamy is illegal in the United States. However, the family wanted to open their lives to viewers in the hopes of exemplifying the positive aspects of polygamy. The Brown family was not so much concerned about the possibility of a criminal investigation as exposing their 'wonderful' lives. This chapter examines how the false self can creep into an individual's life with such ease that this individual may be completely unaware of the lies they tell themselves and others. The audience meets Kody Brown, the father of the family, at the very beginning of the first episode as he is driving a luxury convertible and talking to the camera.
