ABSTRACT

A. Dante's interpretation of a psychological "journey" is graphically represented first by the dark wood and the arduous trip through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. The application of the psychoanalytic method and theory to literature has been well represented and considered by Leon Edel. In the Commedia, Dante wrote authentically recorded "dreams" that can be interpreted using his written "thoughts" before the dream and after the dream in the same manner as in the clinical situation. Mark Vernon in the 30 October 2014 issue of the English Catholic Newspaper Tablet, reported on a conference at the Anna Freud Center in Hamp-stead, England attended by a group of psychotherapists, theologians, and historians. They discussed in some generalities how Dante explored his psychological transformation exclusively in the Purgatory canticle. Freud, from his classical education knew of Dante's The Divine Comedy.
