ABSTRACT

Students in fields like art, advertising, architecture, fashion design, and photography have always been encouraged to develop professional portfolios. These students are expected to include in their portfolios examples of some of their very best work and other examples to show their versatility. This chapter discusses portfolios as an assessment technique, and the essential characteristics of portfolios, their advantages, and their limitations. It also discusses where portfolios may be used in an appropriate manner and how to assist your students in developing their portfolios. Portfolios also suffer from potential limitations. Portfolios are actually a specific type of performance assessment. The most substantial part of the portfolio will be the work samples which would be arranged according to the goals. There are educators who argue that portfolio assessment can work effectively with students of all ages and in almost all academic disciplines.
