ABSTRACT

Teachers are rarely acknowledged as leaders in education, yet they are the unsung heroes of many movements for equitable education, including multicultural education. Many remain undervalued and invisible. They go to work every day, putting everything they have into their hopes and goals for their students, both inside the classroom and outside of it. In this chapter, the author explores how some of the talented and committed teachers with whom she have been privileged to work live out their values. She describes three values that epitomize multicultural education-caring and- love, courage, and creativity- and how they are put into practice. She uses the term "multicultural teachers" as shorthand to describe teachers with a multicultural perspective, that is, teachers who embody the characteristics of those who value diversity, are learners of their students, reflect critically on their own biases and privileges, regularly incorporate multicultural content and pedagogy into their teaching, and are on the path to becoming "multicultural people".
