ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the notion that all of the students deserve to dream and that teachers and schools are in the best position for "creating a chance" to do so. One way to begin the process of changing school policies and practices is to listen to students' views about them; however, research that focuses on student voices is relatively recent and scarce. Recent studies point out numerous ways in which racism and other forms of discrimination affect students and their learning. The students in the research mentioned examples of discrimination based on their race, ethnicity, culture, religion, and language. The students have a lot to teach about how pedagogy, curriculum, ability grouping, and expectations of ability need to change so that greater numbers of young people can be reached. Grading policies have been mentioned in relation to tracking and expectations of achievement. Changing policies and practices is a necessary but insufficient condition for total school transformation.
