TheveryoppositeofBen,healmostastoundedtheStorebyhis ceaselessandstentorianspeeches.TheTimesnewspaperwouldnot containareportofhisquarterlyorations.Hecouldnotprovethat anythingwaswrong,buthecouldnotbelievethatallwasright.He wasinvitedtoattendameetingoftheBoard;indeed,ifwehave studiedthechroniclesoftheStorecorrectly,hewasappointeda memberoftheBoard,thathemightnotonlyseetherightthingdone, butdoit;buthewastooindignanttodohisduty,andhewasso committedtodissatisfactionthataboveallthingshewasafraidof beingundeceived;and,duringhiswholeperiodofoffice,heactually satwithhisbacktotheBoard,andinthatsomewhatunfriendly andinconvenientattitudehedeliveredhisrespectiveopinions. Whether,likethehare,hehadearsbehindhasnotbeencertified; but,unlesshehadeyesbehind,henevercouldhaveseenwhatt-ook place.Amoreperfectmemberofanoppositionhasrarelyappeared.Hewasmadebynaturetoconductanantagonism.At lengthhewasbribedintocontent-bribedbytheonlylegitimate bribery-thebriberyofsuccess.Whenthedividendscameinbehindhim,heturnedroundtolookatthem,andhepocketedhis "brass"andhiswrathtogether;and,thoughhehasneverbeen broughttoconfessthatthingsaregoingright,hehaslongceasedto saythattheyaregoingwrong.
