ABSTRACT

Safety and health in Western Australian workplaces is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 and the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996, supported by codes of practice and guidance notes. The general duty obligations to provide a safe work environment is also extended beyond the traditional employer-employee relationship to take into account other types of work relationships, such as contractors and labor hire arrangements. The code focuses on the general principles applicable to the prevention and management of violence, aggression, and bullying in the workplace. It provides practical guidance for workplaces where people may be exposed to various forms of workplace violence and aggression including physical assault, verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, and bullying. Violence and aggression are present in situations where workers and other people are threatened, attacked, or physically assaulted at work. Psychological aggression also falls under this definition.
