ABSTRACT

My call at The Priory1 with Gertrude took place on Wednesday. We saw both Mr. and Mrs. Lewes, but I hardly spoke to Mr. Lewes, as Gertrude mainly talked to him. I am very glad that I went. Mrs. Lewes was very nice; a softened nature of great strength showed itself in all her words and looks. Best of all in her I liked a nervous intensity of expressive power in her hands, as she held mine for a second or two at parting. We spoke of Mme Bodichon.2 It was a bond I know.
