ABSTRACT

When you’re setting yourself up as a private practitioner, it can be tempting to bill yourself as a generalist, or someone who handles all problems in all populations, or at least a lot of them. However, as you’ve probably figured out, psychology (or medicine, or chiropractic) is a broad area. Think about if you were to look for a therapist or other provider for a specific problem. You’d want to know that they not only have expertise but also experience in that area. From my conversations with other providers, I’ve found that they like to refer to specialists rather than generalists. I know I do.
