ABSTRACT

Typically the words “marketing” and “self-promotion” will give a therapist hives. We don’t like promoting ourselves. It’s uncomfortable. We’d rather be finding out about other people and helping them with their problems. Lack of clients can be a problem, but it’s not one we enjoy fixing, although the result is nice. The good news is that we’ve already got the skills to be good at this, or at least not terrible. One colleague did decline to be interviewed for my book because they (gender-neutral pronoun for anonymity) didn’t feel they were successful in practice, but they admitted they didn’t want to put forth the effort to build the necessary relationships. They obviously had a great aversion to this very necessary activity.
