Fundamental assumptions about the nature of order in the physical world

The following chapters are concerned with the psychological metaphysics of the physical world, which I am defining for convenience as encompassing all events other than human behaviour (and mental activities). Most of what follows is concerned with causal processing of physical events. When we consider that such processing may vary from causal inference for a single occurrence such as the breaking of a pane of glass to notions of universal physical laws, it is evident that causal processing of physical events proceeds on a number of levels, and therefore that the different levels involved should be treated to some extent independently for the development of theory.
