ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies contemporary policy options in drug control and aims to understand how the reverse sting tactic is used by police. It analyses the utility of electronic surveillance and its legal implications and to learn the issues surrounding drug-testing policies as well as to understand the developments in medical marijuana and "cannabusiness". Many strategies for drug control are controversial. Conventional methods often seem to offer little hope for controlling the problem. The most common technique for sting operations directed at drug dealing in various environments is the reverse sting, also called a “buy-and-bust”. Some drug stings, especially those lasting a longer period, result in short-term reductions not only of the targeted crime, but also of other crimes such as robbery. Sting operations create problems and concerns. As with many covert operations, these concerns relate to cost, privacy, and the effectiveness of such operations.
