ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses that Gay Spirituality (GS) is a unique development facilitated by a specifically modern, or post-modern and liberationist consciousness, often American, that has perceived in same-sex love not just a means to a higher end, but good in itself. In a sense it represents a triumph for positive thought. Though Europe might be the ultimate source of GS, American religiosity and a more populist approach to homosexual issues were needed to trigger any notable movement. In turn, these theologies of adaptation may produce new interpretations of and borrowings from existing traditions used by the emerging indigenous form of GS. Toby Johnson, a former Catholic monk and until editor of White Crane Journal, which is dedicated to gay spirituality, is the first writer to have titled and dedicated an entire study to Gay Spirituality for a commercial house.
