ABSTRACT

G ordon Davidson and I began our work together when he directed The Barrier at NYU. Starting in 1964 Gordon directed three semi-staged operas with me in Corpus Christi: Carmen, La Bohème, and Così Fan Tutte. We had permission from Bernstein to do a similar concert-staging of Candide for the 1966–1967 season; but the Corpus Christi Symphony was going through a down phase in the usual “feast or famine” cycle that most small American orchestras experience. The prospective Candide in Corpus was canceled, but Fate stepped in and more than made up for our loss.
