ABSTRACT

I remember riding that train on a September afternoon in 1927 bound for Oberlin, Ohio, and finding some other young folks aboard who had the same destination. I was filled with excitement. Later I wrote a description of our arrival for a freshman English class taught by Mrs. Lampson, and I must have conveyed the feeling, for she kept an eye on me. I believe she recommended me for what was a great privilege—to be invited by Professor Archibald Jelliffe to join an informal writing group that met in his home once or twice a month.
