ABSTRACT

The Office of Strategic Services was created by William “Wild Bill” Donovan with the approval of President Roosevelt to carry out war work that no other agencies were prepared to do. Its work was secret, and all employees had to undergo a careful security check. It was a compartmentalized organization, with one “Branch” not permitted to know about the work of other branches. There were Secret Operations, Secret Intelligence, Morale Operation, and Research and Analysis, and probably others as well. OSS had some remarkable successes and cost a lot of money.
