ABSTRACT

It was dark when I got into the car, and as we drove, through Berlin and out of Berlin, rain began to fall. We were on the Autobahn, one of the wide, four-lane roads that was Hitler’s gift to German civilization. We drove for about two hours, and then we pulled off the Autobahn onto a side road and stopped at an inn of some kind. Kreutzer remained in the car with me, while the SS man went inside. He was gone for about ten minutes, and while he was gone, Kreutzer said to me, “If you want to piss, do it now.”
