ABSTRACT

It is difficult to be consistent in romanizing Republican era Chinese names. I have tried exclusively to use the current standard, Hanyu pinyin. In order to do this for some mission universities, I have romanized the Chinese name. In this way, Soochow University becomes Dongwu University; the University of Nanking, Jinling University, Peking University (the original name of Yenching University), Yanjing University; Lingnan University, of course, remains Lingnan University. Shantung Christian University has not been changed in this way; it is an exception. I have followed the current custom of also making exceptions for the names of the Chinese Nationalist leaders Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek.
