ABSTRACT

This study is concerned with the distribution of wealth in rural China. Our data are from 1988. We focus on the distribution of the four main components of rural wealth-land, fixed productive assets, housing, and financial assets. We first examine in depth each component and its distribution considered separately from the others. We then combine the four components plus debt into a measure of net household wealth in order to examine its distribution and determine how the distribution of each component affects the distribution of total wealth. And finally, we briefly explore how the distributions of wealth and its components compare with the distribution of income.!
