ABSTRACT

Once upon a time there lived a little peasant who had three daughters and on the threshing floor in the bam he had some rye. So he sent his daughters to guard it so that the chickens wouldn’t tear it apart and pilfer it bit by bit. The oldest daughter set out, came to the bam, and took a look around: a cat was coming with a pitcher. It filled the pitcher with rye, ran off, and she followed him. The cat out of the bam—the daughter out of the bam; the cat into the field—the daughter into the field; the cat into the forest—the daughter into the forest; the cat into the hut—the daughter into the hut. And in the hut she spotted a bear lying down. Then the bear said to her: “Marry me, beautiful little girl!”
