ABSTRACT

There lived and dwelt this old woman who was a princess. She had raised a son and a daughter and they were both well built and handsome. A wicked witch found them detestable: “How can I lead them astray and bring them to ruination?” She thought and then it came to her to turn into a fox and go to their mother, where she said, “Cousin, my darling! Here is a ring for you. Put it on your son’s finger. With this ring he will be rich and generous, but he must not remove it and must marry the maid whose hand this ring will fit.” The old woman believed her, rejoiced, and then dying, she instructed her son to take as his wife the one whom the ring fit.
