ABSTRACT

A soldier, having retired, was walking home. He came up to a chapel. He said, “I once made this vow to have a prayer service for the men dedicated to Nikolai the Wonderworker.” So he lit a candle there and then he went on. He came up to another chapel dedicated to the Mother of God of Kazan. And there a prayer service was promised. He placed a candle there. But now he had no money at all, not a kopeck, and the way to the next village was long, and there was no dwelling nearby. He walked on. He really wanted something to eat! Suddenly a man on a black horse came riding by. He had a pie filled with eggs and beef, and a little tart still so warm that it was steaming. They met. The soldier said to him, “Give me a bite of your pie.”
