ABSTRACT

In a certain tsardom in a certain land there lived and dwelt a merchant, and he had three daughters. He built a new house for himself and sent his eldest daughter to spend the first night in it, after which she told him what she had dreamed.† And she dreamed in her dream that she would marry a merchant’s son. And the next night the merchant sent his middle daughter to spend the night in the new house to see what she would dream. She dreamed that she would marry a landowner. On the third night it was the youngest daughter’s turn and he sent her. And she, poor thing, dreamed that she would marry a goat.
