ABSTRACT
The 1980s saw a notable increase in self-employment across EC countries, in absolute terms and as a proportion of total employment. Within this overall picture, however, the experience of individual countries was variable, with the United Kingdom experiencing by far the greatest increase, in contrast to others (such as France and Germany) where the level of self-employment was stagnant, and still others (such as Denmark and Luxembourg) where it continued to decline.
