ABSTRACT

Institutionalism is still far too often dismissed as “mere dissent.” It is much more than that, as I will here try to show. While we have carved out a coherent, meaningful place for institutionalism, or evolutionary economics, much remains to be done. Following the lead of Walter Heller, who devoted his presidential address to the American Economic Association several years ago to “What’s Right with Economics,” 1 this article will be an effort to go beyond the customary stance we all too often assume. Eschewing both excessive defeatism and self-criticism, these remarks are an effort to state positively what’s right with evolutionary economics.
