ABSTRACT
Where did Nicholas Kaldor stand at the end of his life? He continued to believe that economics could be a force for good and that good meant improving the lot of most people. He understood markets and their limitations in providing equity. He recognized the complexity of a government's facing conflicting economic objectives. These givens are important to our understanding of his conception of the role of the economist.
