Editors' Notes: Drafted by Yan Jiaqi and Su Wei on July 13, 1989, this open letter was published in various newspapers in Hong Kong and Europe in the name of the Beijing Autonomous Association of University Students and the Beijing Association of Intellectuals. Su Wei, who was a member of the Institute of Literature at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, is now a member of the Front for a Democratic China and a visiting scholar at Princeton University.
