Editors' Notes: This is the record of an interview that Yan had with Du Nianzhong and Liang Dongping, journalists for Zhongguo shibao (China Times Weekly) (New York and Taipei). The interview, originally entitled "Zhao Ziyang weihe buneng zuzhi datusha?" [Why couldn't Zhao Ziyang prevent the massacre?] was published in the same journal, August 5-11, 1989, pp. 15–17.
