ABSTRACT

The most familiar feature of modem societal transformation is economic growth, reflected in the rapid increase in productivity per capita resulting primarily from the introduction of machinery. Probably the best measure of the scope of modem economic growth is the long-term change in employment patterns from 80 percent or more of the labor force in agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishing to a similar percentage in manufacturing and services. This transformation has a profound effect on the lifestyles and values of all individuals and is a fundamental feature of the thoroughgoing reorientation of society.
