ABSTRACT
In the great April patriotic democracy movement, we petitioned through a series of peaceful actions-the sit-in of April 20 in front of Xinhua Gate, the petition of April 22 in Tiananmen Square, the march of April 27 around the city, and the demonstration on May A-for direct and open dialogue with the government on the basis of full equality. The government, however, brazenly responded with cheating and mudslinging. On May 6 we again petitioned the government for a definite response by May 8. The government delayed answering our petition, saying that it would reply on May 11. On May 11, however, the government said it would do its best to respond definitively within the week. We can no longer tolerate such a deceitful attitude and one delay after another. To make a determined and forceful protest, we have decided to hold a hunger strike to urge the government to hold an immediate and real dialogue with students from the Dialogue Delegation of Beijing colleges and universities.
