ABSTRACT
Since a university is primarily a knowledge institution, the range and organization of knowledge areas in its programs and the knowledge orientation of its members should reveal its ethos, or xitefeng (scholarly style), to use the Chinese term. Added to this might be their sense of history as a scholarly community and their plans for the future development of their institution.
