ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the basic goals and basic policies. The goal of an organization is formulated by those who have the key resources for the organization, and by the value system of the resource holders. The goals are set out in the business creed, occasional statements of top management, and stated long-range goals and policies. In Matsushita's case, growth rate, rate of return on sales and share of market are important goals. The philosophy emphasized the national interest and technology orientation rather than a consumer and marketing orientation, which are characteristics of Matsushita Electric. Goals have a hierarchy and the corporate philosophy is the essence of the basic goals, goals for product market strategy and structure, and the code of behaviour. Profitability and stability are also important system goals for Japanese corporations along with the growth rate. Japanese organization is somewhat similar to Gemeinschaft and in turn the employees devote themselves willingly to the organization.
