ABSTRACT

As well as statues placed inside temples, there was also much sculpture on the outside. This

sculpture could be found on three particular areas of temples. First there was the inner frieze (or

series of carvings) running around the inner section of a temple, below the roof. Then there were

carvings on a series of small sections called metopes (MEH-toh-pays), which were also positioned

below the roof, but ran around the outer part of the temple. These carvings were not

freestanding, but were attached to the temple itself. There was also a triangular shape at the two

ends of the temple, called the pediment. Although there was more space for carvings on the

pediment, it was not possible to portray a continuous story as could be done on a frieze.
