ABSTRACT

The media scene in Hong Kong since it became the Hong Kong Special Administration Region (HKSAR) under Chinese sovereignty in 1997 can be summarized in one word: eventful. The leading players, including the HKSAR government officials, Chinese leaders, media owners, and practicing journalists, all want to influence the role of the media. Their interplay, verbal attacks, and even confrontations suggest that they want to play a more active role in shaping Hong Kong’s media developments. They differ, however, in their views on how to build responsible media.
