ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the construction of the mission building complexes. The building complexes of the New Mexico missions most closely resembled the corporate indigenous communities of central Mexico. The information available on the mission buildings in Baja and Alta California is more detailed and complete, allowing for a more in-depth discussion. The construction of dormitories figured in the record of building at other Dominican missions. The Dominicans established Santa Catalina in 1797, and included dormitories for single women and girls. The Franciscans directed the construction of a variety of other buildings at the first site. Residences for the missionaries had a top priority in building projects, and the record shows the construction of apartments for the Franciscans in 1788,1793, and 1797. The Franciscans moved the mission to Los Berros in April of 1813, and directed the construction of temporary buildings built of palisades with an adobe veneer.
