ABSTRACT

This chapter provides all basic political, economic, and demographic data on a territorial unit of the Russian Federation, Khabarovsk Krai. The most important part of Khabarovsk Krai in Russia’s Far East is the lower Amur River basin, but the krai also occupies a vast mountainous area along the coastline of the Sea of Okhotsk. The krai borders the Republic of Sakha, Amur and Magadan oblasts, Primorskii Krai, and China. Despite some wheat and soybean crops in the Amur basin, agriculture has not been highly developed, due to severe natural and climatic conditions. Local food production does not provide sufficiently for the local population. Major foreign trade partners of the krai are Japan, which buys timber and petroleum products, the United States (petroleum products), and China (ferrous metals). Ishaev mixes his support for market reforms with strong criticism of the federal government.
