ABSTRACT

This chapter provides all basic political, economic, and demographic data on every territorial unit of the Russian Federation, its local government structure, regional politics and electoral history through the spring 2000 elections and the summer 2000 reorganization of the Taimyr Autonomous Okrug. Taimyr Autonomous Okrug is situated in the north of Krasnoyarsk Krai and borders Sakha (Yakutia), Evenk AO, and Yamal-Nenets AO. The okrug includes Taimyr Peninsula, which is the northernmost part of Eurasia and takes up almost half of the okrug’s territory. Gennadii Nedelin was elected governor of Taimyr Autonomous Okrug on 22 December 1996, receiving 64 percent of the vote. Nedelin served for one year on the Board of Directors for Norilsk Nikel, the largest metal factory in Russia, which is located in Taimyr. Shortly after taking office, Lebed set up three working groups in cooperation with the management of Norilsk Nikel, located in Taimyr.
