ABSTRACT

This chapter provides all basic political, economic, and demographic data on a territorial unit of the Russian Federation, the Yaroslavl Oblast. Yaroslavl Oblast, which is located in the central part of the East European plain just northeast of Moscow and borders Tver, Moscow, Ivanovo, Vladimir, Kostroma, and Vologda oblasts, formed an autonomous economic unit sometime in the 17th century. The oblast has highly developed automobile, electro-technical, shipbuilding, fuel, chemical, and timber-working industries. However, the over 200 large enterprises in the region are highly dependent on outside supplies since the oblast lacks an endowment of mineral resources. Lisitsyn boasts that tourists find Yaroslavl to be the “pearl” of Russia’s Golden Ring, but believes that the oblast can offer much more to foreigners than a peaceful taste of Russian history.
