ABSTRACT
Thematically and stylistically, the tone of the fiction of the early eighties communicates the sense that women of color can no longer be perceived as marginal to the empowerment of all American women and an understanding of their reality and imagination is essential to the process of change that the entire society must undergo in order to transform itself. 1
