ABSTRACT

The last chapter concluded by referring to four concepts or notions that have been developed in recent years for studying international relations in view of perceived insufficiencies, as discussed in the chapter, of the micro–macro division. Recognizing the inadequacies of that division does not of course mean that it is valueless. The choice by the student or the scholar of the micro–macro division, or of one of the conceptualizations about to be briefly described, should be governed by the nature of his or her interests and by the facet of the complexity of international relations that he or she wishes to explore and illuminate. The four concepts in question are linkage politics, issue areas, international regimes, and the world society perspective.
