ABSTRACT

Table 8.2 gives the foreign equivalents of UK aluminium alloys. As the use of components is now international this information is useful to give recognition to the equivalent alloys used.

Wrought alloys which are not heat treated have good strength and rigidity with good corrosion resistance. They are used in automobile and marine engineering and architecture, providing durable panels and superstructures in marine environments. There is a great increase in the use of aluminium for offshore structures, such as oil rigs. One of the latest structures designed for the Norwegian oil industry is for a five-storey accommodation block weighing 2000 tonnes with extrusions that are up to 100 mm thick. Ancillary structures to this project include helidecks for helicopter landings and link bridges back to the main oil platform.
