ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the kinds of communication behaviors exhibited by Emma and Cara. It also discusses some strategies for improving interpersonal communication. Although defensiveness is an understandable reaction to an uncomfortable situation, learning how to cope with defensive communication, both our own and that of others can lead to greater confidence as a communicator. Psychological withdrawal occurs when we feel terribly uncomfortable in a particular situation but at the same time feel forced to be physically present. Sarcasm is the use of a biting sense of humor designed to keep people at a distance and to maintain control in a situation. Formula communication is safe, non-threatening communication that involves little or no risk on the part of the communicator. Provisionalism is a willingness to explore new ideas. Individuals in this category realize that theirs is not the only way to look at a situation; they welcome input from others.
