ABSTRACT

Strategic planning enables companies to develop and maintain a competitive advantage in the Internet environment. This chapter is focused on describing and explaining the influence of the Internet on the need for strategic planning and the processes for conducting it. We review types of planning, including strategic planning across and within strategic business units. Then we focus on the role of the Internet in business planning to develop and implement business activity. In particular, we address business models that leverage characteristics of the Internet environment to enhance product characteristics, such as image, or revenue.
