ABSTRACT

Knowledge was wandering in the North on the shores of the DarkWaters and climbed the steep Inconceivable Mountain when he came upon Silent Non-action. Knowledge said to Silent Non-action, “I would like to ask you some questions. What should one perceive and think in order to know the dao? Where should one be and what should one do to abide in the dao? What path ought one to take and what preparations ought one to undertake to attain it?” Knowledge asked these three questions but Silent Non-action did not reply. It was not that he declined to answer: he did not know how to answer. Unable to ask any further questions, Knowledge wandered southward to the Bright Waters and ascended the hill of Dispelled Doubt, where he saw Wild Abandon and pressed the same questions. Wild Abandon replied, “Ah! I know and will tell you.” But in the midst of saying this, he forgot what he wanted to say.
