ABSTRACT

C han Buddhism is a school of Buddhism that developed in China, but derived its name from the Indian meditation tradition known in Sanskrit as dhyana. Chan is simply the Chinese manner of pronouncing dhyana. When the school of Chan Buddhism migrated to Japan in the thirteenth century, it became known in Japan as Zen; Zen being the Japanese manner of pronouncing Chan. Both names are derived ultimately from dhyana; they are really nothing more than differences in pronunciation.
