ABSTRACT

A n increasingly important area for study within international relations is globalization. Globalization addresses the effects of increasing integration in communications, culture, and economics. A revolution in com-

munication and transportation technologies has increased the interaction of people around the world and this has important repercussions for international politics. Knowledge of events happening on the other side of the planet is shared via international news and the Internet; people travel across state borders with important implications for security and health; and people struggle to make sense of place and identity in an increasingly globalized world. In this chapter, we discuss three important areas associated with globalization:

movement of information movement of people effects on identity

Globalization can be defined as “the increasing integration of the world in terms of communications, culture, and economics” (Goldstein 2003, 547) and is often said to encourage commonalities among individuals (the McWorld syndrome) and emphasize differences (including national differences). Most scholars recognize that this is much more complicated than an either-or process. One productive way to research these issues is to ask questions that address the complexities involved. First, make sure you understand the dynamics by reading some general information. Then, read more. You may want to start with the following resources.
