ABSTRACT

International conflict and national security are major themes associated with the study of international relations. The types of conflict are: territorial border disputes, conflicts over control of the government, economic conflicts, ethnic conflicts, religious conflicts, ideological conflicts. The scholarly literature in the field of international relations is the most important resource one will use to determine the specification of their dependent variable and their choice of independent variables. Another way to narrow the topic of international conflict and war is to study the scope of conflict or levels of violence. A different way to study conflict is to analyze state responses, or types of intervention associated with conflict. Intervention refers to actions by one state that affect another state. Many students today are interested in the topic of international terrorism, and this general topic clearly falls under the rubric of international conflict. There are many ways one could develop a question-based research project around the general topic of terrorism.
